The term ‘The Ashes’ originated in a mock obituary for English cricket in the Sporting Times following England’s defeat by Australia for the first time on home soil at The Oval in August 1882. A few weeks later an English team, led by Ivo Bligh, set off for Australia to ‘regain the Ashes’. During a tour match at the Rupertswood Estate outside Melbourne on Christmas Eve 1882, Bligh was given the small terracotta urn to symbolise the Ashes

Lady Florence Darnley (nee Morphy), The Countess of Darnley, circa 1890. Florence was born in Victoria, Australia, daughter of John Stephen Morphy, sometime police magistrate at Beechworth, and met Ivo Bligh (Lord Darnley) at Rupertswood when he captained the English cricket team that visited Australia in 1882-83. Legend has it that she was one of the Melbourne ladies who presented Bligh with a tiny urn, containing what they termed as ‘The Ashes’. Ivo and Florence were married in St. Mary’s Church, Sunbury, with the reception held at Rupertswood, near Melbourne, Australia on 9 February 1884. Following Lord Darnley’s death in 1927 Lady Darnley gave the urn to the Marylebone Cricket Club in London where it remains on display in the Club museum. The tiny terracotta urn has come to be regarded as the trophy whenever England and Australia play a Test match series. (Photo by Popperfoto via Getty Images/Getty Images)
