For the first time since its inception in 1934-35, there will be no Ranji Trophy, but the BCCI has announced that in the current domestic season, which has been significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the senior men’s, senior women’s, and Under-19 men’s 50-over competitions will take place. “this has been decided after having received your feedback” this was decided after your feedback had been received.

Pointing out that “because of the precautions necessary for the safe conduct of the games, it has been difficult to plan the cricket calendar,” Shah wrote: “… it was extremely important for us to ensure that women’s cricket takes place and I am extremely pleased to inform you that we will conduct the Senior Women’s One-day tournament simultaneously with the Vijay Hazare Trophy.”

“The details regarding these tournaments shall be communicated to you [state associations] shortly.”

Shah pointed to the “successful conduct” of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 – the final is scheduled for Sunday – and the preparations to sound a note of optimism for the upcoming senior men’s series against England.

The BCCI had previously requested the state associations to include their recommendations on the domestic calendar, which had to be largely diminished due to the pandemic. In the UAE, the 2020 edition of the IPL was held, with the four-match Women’s T20 Challenge held alongside the men’s event playoffs, and since January 10, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has taken place across seven centers. Next up is the all-format series from February 5 to March 28 between India and England – to be played in Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Pune. After that, the 2021 edition of the IPL is planned, but whether it will be played in India or elsewhere, there is no clarification yet, with the UAE remaining one of the potential alternate venues.

Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain who is now the president of the BCCI, had himself expressed his intention to stage the tournament, and there were reports that it could be held after the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tournaments in a shorter format than normal. However, the state associations were not in favour of the multi-day tournament being hosted.

However, the BCCI has not yet said anything about the women’s national team, which has not taken the field since March 8, 2020 – the final against Australia of the women’s T20 World Cup.
