Quetta Gladiators looked poised to end their string of defeats on Friday night after losing their first two matches, but a late charge from Sherfane Rutherford and Wahab Riaz controlled the game and gave Peshawar Zalmi their second win in 3 matches.

Zalmi’s chase of 199 was the maximum of the season, and the pursuing side won for the eighth time in PSL 2021. The Zalmi are now in second position on the points table, whereas the Gladiators are still in last place.

After being invited to bat, mostly on back of a 105-run partnership between Sarfaraz Ahmed and Azam Khan, the Gladiators scored 198 for 7. At a strike rate of over 200, Sarfaraz, captain of the Gladiators, struck 81 and Azam struck 47 in 26 balls. The target appeared too difficult to accomplish for most of the second innings, but some crazed bowling in the death overs of Mohammad Hasnain and Dale Steyn modified the face of the game.

Haider Ali hit a 29-ball 50 for Zalmi, although Imam Ul Haq and Shoaib Malik also contributed. Although it was Rutherford and Riaz, their lower-order batsmen, who made a difference. In his unbeaten 18-ball innings, Rutherford created 36, while Riaz made amends for his weak bowling display by hammering 20 off just eight balls to secure a bring victory, where he leaked 52 runs in four overs.
