ICC officially launched the inaugural ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League on 27th July 2020. Based on a format similar to that of Test Championship, the participating teams will be awarded points on the basis of their performance against various teams in bilateral ODI series. The points tally at the end of term will decide the qualifying teams for the World Cup 2023, to be played in India. This ensures more credibility to the bilateral ODIs as important points meant for qualification for World Cup will be at stake.

Partcipants

13 teams will participate in the league. 12 full-time members viz. India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, West Indies, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Bangladesh along with Netherlands will contest the league. Neatherland were the winner of World Cricket League Championship in 2017, hence booked a spot in the Super League.

Format

Each team would play 8 other teams in the league, 4 of them being at home while other 4 being away. In each series, 3 pre-decided matches would be evaluated for the Super League. This works within the parameters of the existing Future Tour Programmes between Members. A win would fetch 10 points, a tie or no result or abandoned match would add 5 points while a loss would mean zero points.
