#OnThisDay All English Day Birth of Botham, Sutcliffe, Barrington and Fred
Titmus.

England’s greatest all rounder”Ian Botham”.His peak year was probably 1981 were he turned a series against Australia on its head and was main component for England three consecutive wins.At Headingley,England were heading for second loss(probably Ashes losing defeat),92 runs behind in the follow-on with 7 wickets down. Then he intervened and played one of the most remarkable innings of149*,England went on to take the score to 129.Bob Willis(8/43) then bowled out Australia for 111.At Edgbaston chasing 151 to win,Australia were cruising at 105/4 but then Botham arrived and took 5/1 as Australia were bowled out for 121.His overall record of 5,200 runs @33.54 and 383 wickets @28.40 makes him leading English all-rounder of all time.

Herbert Sutcliffe arguably the greatest English Test batsman after Jack Hobbs. He was fastest to reach 1,000 test runs(later equalled by Everton Weekes) in 12 innings. His batting average of 60.73(atleast 1000 runs) is best among all English men.One of the great players on “bad wickets”.Hobbs and Sutcliffe partnerships plays a altogether different role in Cricket folklore. The pair accumulated 3249 runs at an astonishing (and that too on sticky wickets)avg of 87.81(highest) with 15 century stand.

Ken Barrington ,if you talk about comeback in Cricket then there are few who could challenge Ken.A typical English batsmant, the straight uplift of his bat is model for any one to copy. Also he was one of the great exponent of square cut and cover drive. He never shy away from controversy particularly the Griffith saga.He was more of a grafter as most of the matches were played on variable bounce pitches, push the straight and short ball for singles.Nevertheless his batting avg of 58.67 (with 6806 runs)is next only to Sutcliffe. His performances overseas were better than those at home.
